Thermage is a non-invasive treatment that works to initiate new collagen within the body, thus resulting in tighter skin, and renewed facial contours. How Does Thermage Work to Promote Skin Tightening?
Skin is made up of two layers, the visible outer layer called the epidermis, and the deeper layer called the dermis. The main structural component of the dermis is a protein called collagen, which provides the skin its strength. As we age, the body produces less collagen resulting in wrinkles and laxity. The Thermage procedure causes the collagen in the dermal layers of the skin and its underlying tissue to tighten, thereby reducing skin laxity and wrinkles and renewing facial contours.
As we age, our skin loses collagen, a protein found in the dermis that provides our skin its strength. Consequently, the decrease in collagen causes our skin to lose strength and therefore we see laxity and wrinkles. The Thermage procedure uses a patented radio frequency technology that sends a precise controlled zone of heat into the dermis and underlying tissue. This heat penetrates into our existing collagen and initiates a natural biological response that causes it to constrict and tighten, making the skin tighter and smoother looking. While this is occurring, our bodies initiate a second wound-healing response to the heat, thus initiating new collagen and providing long-term tightening of the skin. These two processes happening in combination allow both short-term and long-term skin tightening results.
